Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School

Transition

At St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy, we understand that moving from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone in your child’s educational journey. We are committed to ensuring a smooth, welcoming, and supportive transition for all Year 6 students as they begin their new adventure in Year 7.

As a Catholic school, our values of Love, Inspiration, Empowerment and Joy are at the heart of everything we do, and we provide a nurturing environment where each student feels safe, valued, and inspired to grow in their faith and learning.

Transition Program

To help students and families feel prepared and excited for the move to secondary school, we have a dedicated transition program that includes visits to local primary schools to introduce students to life at St Edmund Arrowsmith, transition days where students meet their peers, experience taster lessons, and get to know their new surroundings, and parent information sessions to help parents understand the curriculum, expectations, and support available.

Our pastoral team and chaplain also provide guidance and encouragement as students adjust to their new school life throughout the coming months and each student's school journey. Our Year 7 curriculum is carefully designed to provide a broad and balanced education, nurturing academic excellence while fostering personal and spiritual development. With specialist teachers, modern facilities, and engaging lessons, students are encouraged to develop their talents and discover new interests.

We are committed to working closely with our feeder primary schools, to ensure that this transition is as smooth and concern free as possible. We have many people in place to ensure that we understand your child's needs before joining our school community, including a dedicated Year 6/7 Year Manager (Mrs. L. Cavanagh). We also have a number of fantastic Year 8 Peer Mentors who play a key role at important stages in your child's journey.

In order to welcome both pupils and parents into our school community, we plan for a variety of transition events and activities each year, which include:

  • Open Evening
  • Open Mornings
  • Year 7 Intake Evening
  • Year 7 Post-transition Evening
  • Primary School Roadshows, which involve the Headteacher, key members of staff and current pupils
  • Liaison meetings upon request
  • Year 7 Parents' Evening

Summer School

Each year, we offer all incoming Year 6 pupils a place at the Saint Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy Summer School. This runs for one week, during the summer holidays, 9am-3pm each day.

Our summer school offers a blend of both academic and exciting enrichment opportunities and those pupils involved will have an opportunity to build a community with their fellow pupils, forge relationships with new teachers and familiarise themselves with their new school environment. In addition to academic tutoring in small groups, pupils will also have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of enrichment activities.

 Building Friendships and Community

Through extracurricular activities, retreats, and trips, our Year 7 students quickly become part of the St Edmund Arrowsmith family. Our school community is built on strong relationships, and we encourage all students to participate in clubs, sports, and faith-based activities to help them develop friendships and a sense of belonging.

We recognise that every student adjusts differently, and our team is always available to provide support. Whether through one-to-one pastoral care, learning support, or simply a listening ear, we ensure that every child has the guidance they need to thrive.

We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students and their families into our caring and vibrant school community. If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact via the details here:
